If you’re an entrepreneur who is new to homeschooling or vice versa, you may be struggling with the thought of whether doing both is even possible. Let me assure you that it is, whether you’re running a business from home or conducting it elsewhere.

It’s important to note though that you may struggle in the beginning and you may encounter challenges along the journey. That’s completely normal and to be expected. There are things you can do though to ensure that homeschooling while running a business will work for you.

Try these tips.

Create a structure for your day.

Life as a homeschool parent who’s also an entrepreneur can get hectic because there are many things to do each day. How do you ensure that you will be able to get the most important things done?

Creating a structure for your day is essential because it provides you and your family with a flow or a routine that everyone can follow. Your structure will depend on your family’s lifestyle and the nature of your business, among others. The important thing is to create one that works for your specific needs. Be organized.

Balancing all of your responsibilities can become overwhelming. However, you can lessen the overwhelm by staying organized.

Use a planner to stay on top of your tasks and schedules for both home and business. Designate a specific area to store your homeschool materials. If you’re running your business from home, designate a work area as well. Just make sure everything has a place so you can easily find things when you need them. Make your business a part of your homeschool.

Having your own business gives you a unique opportunity to teach your kids some valuable skills. Use this opportunity to your advantage by combining business with schoolwork. Not only will this allow you to impart knowledge and skills, but it will also help give your kids a better understanding and appreciation for what you do.

Some of the lessons you can teach them include budgeting and managing finances, research and marketing, product development, customer service and so much more.

Simplify and delegate.

While there are definitely ways to do certain things both in business and in homeschool, know that you have the freedom to make adjustments to them.  If a task seems to be too complicated or takes too much time, simplify them.

For instance, don’t be ashamed to subscribe to e-learning portals for some subjects. Hire an assistant for the day-to-day administrative tasks such as answering emails. Delegate certain chores to your husband and kids. Choose a flexible curriculum that will work best for your family.

Be intentional with family time.

Homeschooling and running a business may be two important aspects of your life. However, do not forget that you are a spouse, a mom, and a woman too.

Know when it’s time to set aside your homeschooling hat and just be “mom”. Your kids will thank you for it. Set aside time for just your husband too so he doesn’t feel neglected. It’s helpful to have your husband on board with whatever is going on with your business and homeschool. After all, you’re doing all of these for the benefit of your family. Lastly, carve some me-time. Self-care needs to be a priority. You deserve it!

Running a business and homeschooling can be challenging but not impossible. Just be clear about your goals and expectations and be open to adjusting whenever needed and you’ll be fine.
